Podcasts to Help You Tackle Motherhood Like a Boss

by: Jasmine Dedrick

I consider myself to be a forever student because I love learning new things. I used to be an avid reader, but lately can’t seem to get into it as much these days. Instead, I listen to podcasts! Podcasts are a convenient and informal way to still get all the helpful tips and advice you seek. Audiobooks are always an option as well, but I really like the conversational flow of podcasts. I personally like to listen to them during a lengthy commute, while I’m knocking out chores around the house, doing a few work tasks, etc. In honor of Mother’s Day, I wanted to share seven mommy/parenting podcasts that I highly recommend every mama or mama-to-be, listen to.

  1. The Happy Muva’s Day Podcast - First off, how cute is this show name? Also, I thought it was pretty clever to start off with this one,  considering the upcoming holiday! This particular podcast is hosted by mommy friends, Noemie & Sharnikya. One is raising their child in a two-parent household, while the other is a single parent. I think this is great, because you get to hear two different perspectives on raising a little one and the pros and cons of each situation. The conversations are candid and honest, as they discuss how they’re navigating this whole parenting thing, one day at a time. I love how encouraging and gracious they are to one another. It reminds me so much of the type of convos and dynamic I have with my closest girlfriends.

  2. The Lazy Genius - This isn’t technically a parenting podcast, but I do love how host Kendra takes a simple, yet purposeful, approach to life. She essentially teaches us listeners how to focus on the things that matter and not spend time on the things that don’t. And get this, YOU get to choose what matters and what doesn’t. The thing with parenting or just life in general, is that you get inundated with so many other people’s opinions about what you should and shouldn’t do. And then, you eventually find out that everything isn’t for everybody, so you just need to DO WHAT WORKS FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY! Episode topics range from laundry, to friendships, etc. - which are all things you’re balancing alongside motherhood, so it’s worth the listen!

  3. The Motherly Podcast & Becoming Mama by Motherly - Have you ever wondered how your favorite actress, business owner, performer, senator, author, etc. tackles motherhood? The Motherly Podcast is for you! Liz Tenety brings you weekly episodes ft. guests like Kristen Bell, Gabrielle Union and Senator Tammy Duckworth, to tell all about their ideas and insights on parenting. Get ready to be inspired! There’s also the Becoming Mama Podcast that’s great for expecting mothers or anyone who wishes to be a mother, in the future. There’s quick episodes covering the basics of pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum.

  4. Risen Motherhood - This is a faith-based podcast hosted by Emily Jensen & Laura Wifler. For the mom who feels like she’s still learning and growing, & needs a reminder that she’s not on this motherhood journey alone, this podcast is for you! It’s super uplifting and reminds us that even though we don’t have it all figured out, we can always go to the One who does. New episodes available every week!

  5. Melanin Mamas - Every Tuesday, host Maqsoodah jumps on with a special guest, to discuss important topics related to being a black mother in America. Black mothers have a much higher maternal mortality rate than mothers of any other race. That’s why, in conjunction with proper medical care,  it’s important to have resources like this podcast, to help them be as healthy as possible, both physically and mentally. Maqsoodah is a NICU nurse, in school to be a midwife and a mother of two!

  6. Motherhood in Black and White - This show is hosted by two boy moms, who have shared experiences with living in the suburbs and working in male-dominated workplaces. However, one of them is white and the other is black, hence the clever show name. So, though they have commonalities between them, it’s interesting to hear their unique experience within those similarities. Some of us have friends of a different race, and if you don’t, shows like this definitely help you see a different perspective. Which is helpful, because it assists us in better understanding what the other people experience and how they view the world. Get ready for lots of honesty and humor!

  7. Raising Good Humans - The title of this podcast really got me, because I remember hearing once about this idea of not raising children to be good children, but that we should be raising them to be good human beings. My mind was blown, and my perspective on how I’d want to parent my future children changed. I began realizing that how I parent them and what I teach them at home, will lay the foundation for the type of adult they will be, later on. That concept might be obvious to others, but it was super enlightening to me. Every Friday, Dr. Aliza Pressman and a special guest, drop in to offer some science-based insight and practical tools, to help make parenting less stressful and more joyful! Dr. Aliza is a developmental psychologist, clinical professor & parent educator who happens to be a mother of two, herself - so she totally gets it!

I hope you found at least one new show to add to your podcast library! Praying your Mother’s Day is filled with lots of joy and laughter, and that you receive an outpour of love and appreciation. You deserve it that day and everyday, after!
